Diction 2

" The night-its silence- its rest, was rent in twain by a savage, a sharp, a shrilly sound that ran from end to end of Thornfield Hall."- 208
Ther is one word that needs to be defined. The word twain means two.

In this quote the author is trying to describe the sound that rips through the hall in the night. She uses the phrase "rent in twain" to say that the silence of the hall was destroyed by this sound. She uses "savage, a sharp,a shrilly' to describe what the sound was like and what it sounds like. She is trying to use these things to portray the fear of Jane.
